Letter to 8th Grade Students and Families 2018 (Distributed to Students on 1/3/18):
‚Äč

January 3, 2018

Dear 8th Grade Families,

Today your student has met with Keene High School’s Principal and Administrator of Guidance and School Counseling Services.  Your child has received a Program of Studies to review with you as they begin to make course selections for next year and their Course Selection Sheet (to include teacher recommendations).  Please take time to thoughtfully select classes and write course choices on your student’s Course Selection Sheet and make sure that it is in pencil.  In order for the paperwork to be complete, your student must have a parent/guardian signature.  Delayed or incomplete course selection sheets may impact schedule selections so it is important to turn material in on time!  During guidance class next Tuesday, students will be provided time to work on their sheets and to answer preliminary questions.  They will be completing the rest of the paperwork at home.  Students are also welcome to make an appointment with me to go over their sheet and answer any questions that they might have.

Be advised that once choices are made on the course selection sheets, changes cannot be made next year unless there is an inappropriate placement.  Therefore, be mindful about what courses you select making sure you have a four year plan in place.  Course selection sheets are due back to Mrs. DiLegge at Westmoreland School by January 13, 2018.  If sheets are completed beforehand they will gladly be accepted, in fact you are encouraged to get them in earlier.  If you have a question about your child’s recommendation, please follow up with their teacher directly.

The 8th grade students will have the opportunity to tour KHS in March which will occur during the school day.  Permission slips will be distributed closer to the date.  Finally, your 8th grade student has the opportunity to take the 8/9 PSAT this year and will be able to take the test for free and transportation is provided.  Basic information about the PSAT 8/9 is on the back of this letter.  Registration for this begins Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018 and closes on Friday, January 19, 2018.  To register please visit the Keene High School website and click on the PSAT 8/9 link to register.

Finally, in March, KHS School Counselors will come and meet individually with students to review the completed course selections and to personally introduce themselves to your child.  Parents/guardians are welcome to attend if they are available but it is not mandatory.  As the time approaches, a date and meeting time will be provided. Thank you for your support and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Kendra DiLegge

 Field Trip Grades 5 &8

Dear Parents/Guardians,

All fifth and eighth grade students have started off their school year in guidance class exploring their vocational interests through inventories, assessments and researching jobs/careers that might be of interest to them based upon reporting what they enjoy doing both in school and out of school.  Students currently are working on a poster on a specific job and soon they will be presenting to the entire class factual information about what training and/or education is required for the job and what skills they need to be successful in the job.

To make this topic most meaningful we are going to travel to a few manufacturing companies in Keene to include a tour at Maxcess International, G.S. Precision and Sting Ray Optics.  Following the tours, student will be traveling by bus to Keene High School.  They will have the opportunity to tour the Cheshire Career Center which hosts programs in Accounting, Advanced Manufacturing, Business, Careers in Education, Computer Maintenance and Repair Networking, Computer Science, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Construction Trades, EMT, Firefighting, Health Science and Automotive Service Technology.

While at KHS, students will have the opportunity to dine in their “on campus” restaurant and practice restaurant etiquette.  The cost for lunch is $5.00.  Your student is welcome to bring a bagged lunch or purchase their lunch from the restaurant.  The food is delicious!  Please indicate your lunch selection below.   We will return back to Westmoreland School by the end of the day, prior to buses arriving. Students are asked to bring a small snack with them while we tour the companies in the morning.

Please sign the paperwork below in order for your child to participate.  Also, please include the $5.00 ahead of time.  We need to provide advance notice to KHS about the lunch planning so that they are prepared for us when we arrive as we will be on a strict time schedule. Please feel welcome to contact me should cost be an issue as we would like all 5th and 8th grade students to be able to participate. Please return this permission slip signed by this Friday, 10/27/17.

                                    Thank you,

Trip Reminders

-Please arrive to school on time!  We depart promptly at 8:15 a.m.

-Bring a snack with you.  Snack time will take place around 10:00.

-Remember that you are visiting local companies and programs where one day you might be applying for a job or be a part of their program.  First impressions are important so dressing for the occasion is encouraged. Khakis/dress pants or a formal dress shirt might be an example of appropriate attire (Think about what you might wear if you were presenting in front of the class and that might be a good choice for clothing).

- Safety glasses will be provided while we are touring the companies.  They must be worn for safety purposes.

-We will be departing KHS at 1:50 and will arrive back at Westmoreland School around 2:10.

Needs Based Assessment distributed to Staff in order to determine appropriate counseling programming and services for students and families.  Included is a blank survey:

Needs Based Assessment of the School Counseling Program at Westmoreland School 2017-2018

Free vector graphic: Counselor, Icon, School Counselor - Free ...

Directions: Please complete this 5 minute Needs Based Assessment of the school counseling services at Westmoreland School so that I can have a clear sense of what needs you see for your students at the beginning of this school year.  This will assist me in gathering data for programming. You can either print this document out and circle/check your responses and return to my mailbox OR you can cut and paste this document and highlight or underline your responses and send it back to me via Email.

Thank you in advance for you time!

Grade Level.  (You can select more than one grade in this assessment.  For example, if you work as a middle school teacher you will select grades 5-8.  If the needs vary significantly from one grade to the next, you can either make a note it in the comments sections or fill out a completely new assessment per grade you work with if needed).  Also, when a teacher selects “specials” it is assumed you work mostly K-8. In that case, you might want to do one form for middle school and one form for elementary school.
